THE POWER OF ADVOCACY: Why Industry Professionals Must Champion the National School Lunch Program

BY TEISHA ROBERTSON Director of Sales K12 Pilgrim’s/Gold Kist

In the world of child nutrition, few initiatives have had as profound an impact as the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Since its inception in 1946, the NSLP has ensured that millions of students across America receive nutritious meals every day — fueling not only their bodies, but their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. For those of us in the School Nutrition Industry, the NSLP is more than a government program; it’s the foundation upon which our shared mission rests. And yet, the success and sustainability of this vital program depends not only on administrators and policymakers, but on the active advocacy and engagement of industry professionals like us. One of the most powerful ways to make that impact is by serving on committees and advocacy groups that shape the future of school nutrition. Advocacy in our field is not limited to lobbying on Capitol Hill. It includes educating legislators, sharing operational insights, influencing policy decisions, and helping shape the narrative around what school meals represent. Industry professionals — from manufacturers to brokers and distributors — bring unique perspective to the table. We understand the supply chain, the cost pressures, the innovation behind nutritious products, and the real-world challenges schools face in serving compliant, appealing meals within tight budgets. By taking an active advocacy role, we ensure that industry voices are part of the dialogue, not afterthoughts in the policy-making process. Serving on a School Nutrition Association (SNA) committee, a state-level industry advisory board, or a task force offers a structured way to engage in meaningful advocacy. Committee service allows professionals to: ■ Collaborate directly with school nutrition directors and decision-makers, strengthening mutual understanding and partnership. ■ Shape industry standards and recommendations that influence procurement, menu planning, and policy priorities. ■ Contribute expertise on product innovation, distribution efficiencies, and sustainability. ■ Elevate visibility of the industry’s role as a trusted partner in nourishing students. In essence, committee service bridges the gap between industry and operations — aligning both toward a shared goal: supporting the health and well-being of students. The school nutrition landscape is evolving rapidly. Rising food costs, supply chain instability, workforce shortages, and shifting nutritional guidelines continue to challenge both operators and industry partners. At the same time, there’s increasing awareness about the role of school meals in combating food insecurity and childhood obesity, and in advancing equity across communities. Policymakers are listening — but they need informed, credible voices to guide their decisions. By advocating through committees and associations, industry professionals help ensure that: ■ Legislation supports both access and sustainability — for schools and suppliers alike. ■ Policies are grounded in operational realities, not just theoretical ideals. ■ Innovation in child nutrition continues to thrive through collaboration and shared expertise. When we engage, we strengthen the entire system. When we stay silent, we leave critical decisions to others who may not fully understand the complex ecosystem that sustains school meals. How to Get Involved?! There are many ways to advocate for the NSLP as an industry professional: ■ Join a local or national SNA committee focused on public policy, membership, or industry relations. ■ Attend the Legislative Action Conference (LAC) to meet with lawmakers and share firsthand stories about your impact in child nutrition. Your time, voice, and expertise can make a tangible difference in shaping how school nutrition programs evolve and how children across America are nourished every day. The Shared Responsibility is ours! The National School Lunch Program is not a school issue or a government issue — it’s a national responsibility. Every stakeholder in the school nutrition ecosystem has a role to play in ensuring its success. As industry professionals, our advocacy matters. Our participation matters. And our commitment to serving — not just selling — will define the future of school nutrition for generations to come. By serving on committees, contributing our expertise, and standing up for the programs that serve our nation’s children, we reaffirm our collective mission: To make EVERY MEAL matter! ■ ■ Partner with school districts to promote program awareness and celebrate success stories. ■ Mentor new professionals in understanding the importance of advocacy and engagement.
