Through their tireless efforts, kids in 15 districts across the two counties will have expanded access to fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables,” said No Kid Hungry New York Director Rachel Sabella. “We’re incredibly grateful for all the school nutrition staff working day in and out to feed kids in the Southern Tier.” “MolinaCares is honored to support Broome-Tioga BOCES in their effort to tackle food insecurity,” said Kristen Holdsworth, Associate Vice President of Sales, Marketing, andCommunityEngagement. “MolinaCares knows the impact this refrigerated truck will have on the communities we serve, and we are so proud to be able to sponsor this initiative.” The “No Kid Hungry” initiative is providing a $100,000 grant, MolinaCares a $30,000 grant.

Grants from the national “No Kid Hungry” initiative and The Molina Cares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of New York (“Molina”), will enable the Broome-Tioga BOCES’ Food Services Rock on Café TM program to ensure children throughout the Southern Tier region receive healthy, nutritious meals regardless of their circumstances and any hurdles created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thegrantswill go toward thepurchaseof a refrigerated box truck that Broome-Tioga BOCES will use to fortify the breakfast-in-the-classroom and farm to school initiatives, which will establish partner schools as community food hubs. “Our biggest barrier at the Rock on CaféTM in buying local has been transportation logistics,” said Broome-Tioga BOCES Senior Food Service Director Mark Bordeau. “Receiving this grant money to purchase a refrigerated truck eliminates that barrier and will bring us one step closer to achieving our goal of 40% of the foods we purchase coming from NY State.” The truck will be used to distribute products delivered to one central location to more school buildings and may also be used to pick up products from local farms that may not have the means to deliver to schools. Julie grew up on a dairy farm in Skaneateles, NY and has always loved food especially local food. She plans her vacations around farmers markets, restaurants, and anything else to do with food. Julie is the Registered Dietitian at Broome-Tioga BOCES where she works with 15 school districts in the Southern Tier of New York State who implement NY Thursdays, a menu that highlights NY foods twice a month.
