May 5th was a conference day for Buffalo Public Schools and a great opportunity for our first in person district meeting with our Child Nutrition team in over 2 years. Almost 400 school lunch heroes gathered for a training, a little different than our normal USDA regulation. The American Dairy Association provided the dynamic speaker Dr. John Hodge to present to our staff. He had their full attention from start to finish with the message that we have the power to change a child’s life. His story resonated with so many of us. That one teacher that made the difference. Why not that one lunch person? Our second speaker was Pastor, who is from a church in our community. His message was about how we are with each other. With a clever bag of tools, he reminded us that we need to help carry each other, smash the issues and be aware and sensitive in the workplace. Since March of 2020 our Child Nutrition team has not missed a beat. Short staffed, supply chain, meal delivery, masks and Covid have been ongoing challenges that created a diversion to why we are here. These speakers were selected to bring back some energy and recognition of our purpose. Reminders of how we impact each other and our students every day. To be aware and conscious of how we interact with each other and the children we serve. On May 6th, In recognition of School Lunch Hero Day in Buffalo Public Schools, we invited Senator Tim Kennedy to give a shout out to some of our staff. Southside Elementary BPS 93 is in the Senator’s neighborhood, and he came to visit before lunch service to shake hands, show gratitude and give recognition to our essential workers. He recognizes their commitment to the students at Southside and the staff was very appreciative of his gratitude for their service.

We are all busy, and sometimes this is a thankless job. Know that you are heroes in our schools and communities. Take pride, every single day for what you do. You make a difference in the lives of our children. Not just with the meals you serve but most importantly with the loving hands you serve. Thank you for all you do!
