Northeast Area CARTHAGE CENTRAL RECEIVES Community Impact Award

BY SARAH KEEN, RDN FOOD SERVICE MANAGER, SCHUYLERVILLE CSD The Tri-County schools of Washington, Warren and Saratoga counties have been busy this fall! The food service directors meet monthly to share menu ideas, troubleshoot procurement issues, and collaborate on Farm to School initiatives. We are selling sheet pans as a fundraiser in order to host a spring banquet at NO COST to our local members. Individual districts have been up to some exciting things as well: Eastern Area TRI-COUNTY CHAPTER UPDATES

Mechanicville City School District celebrated National School Lunch Week with guest servers each day. The district superintendent, principals, food service director Deb Mackey, chief of police and a local police officer all took part.

The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce recently hosted their Annual Business Awards Dinner. This year, Car- thage Central School Food Service Department was selected to receive the Community Impact Award-SO exciting!

The staff of Carthage CSD food service department have truly gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure students did not go hungry while school was closed. They came to work while everyone else stayed home, they delivered meals to families who couldn’t pick up, they weathered the rain, snow, and freezing temperatures, they worked evenings after a long day, and the list goes on and on! Their selflessness, courage, hard work, and flexi - bility during this unprecedented time speaks volumes about their dedication to the students of Carthage CSD! I am so thankful to have such an AMAZING team! They are all SUPERSTARS!

Corinth Central School began celebrating a Harvest of the Month this year and featured tomatoes in October. They processed 180 pounds of San Marzano Plum Tomatoes from Pitney Meadows Farm in Saratoga Springs, NY to make 18 gallons of marinara sauce! Thanks to Kevin London, Chef and owner of Farmhouse Food in Saratoga for his Marinara recipe, and to Sarah Millis, the Pak St Café cook for all her hard work!

Argyle Central School District’s Food Service Director, Meaghan Wilkins, started a Garden Committee during the 2020-2021 school year. The committee was made of the school nurse, 2nd grade teacher, 4th grade teacher, HS science teacher and herself. With the help of the entire 4th grade the garden was planted in the Spring. Everyone really pulled together to buy garden boxes, dirt, hoses etc and the garden was tended all summer by 4th graders, their parents and the PTSA volunteers! It was a true Labor of Love! We had peppers, tomatoes, onions, banana peppers, carrots and potatoes for the students to eat in the cafeteria! We are expecting to do the same this coming year and maybe even grow a little more!

Schuylerville Central School District celebrated National Farm to School Month in October with a variety of new and specialty items. Menus included NY beef from Smith Packing Company, NY ice cream, NYmaple syrup, fresh pressed apple cider from an orchard in town, a variety of NY vegetables, and lettuce grown by Schuylerville’s High School agriculture education classes.
