BY DEBORAH MACKEY, CDM/CFPP FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR, MECHANICVILLE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT I got the Golden Lunch Tray Award idea from a workshop I attended a couple years ago. The Golden Lunch Tray Award is awarded to one student (Pre-K - 5) a month. This student shows that they can keep their hands to themselves, uses a quiet voice, uses their manners, does not run, push or budge while in line and is willing to try new things (which we all know is difficult for that age). The real impetus to get it started was to do something fun for the elementary kids. I feel so much has been lost with Covid, that anything we could do to make lunchtime more fun would be a great idea. I was right and our kids were so pumped up about this little event! The winner’s mom jotted me a note telling me that when she picked her son up from school, he was telling her all about his award and other students overheard and started high-fiving him for being the winner! She was so happy for him. Our goal would be to have students that might be a bit rambunctious in line, maybe don’t use good manners, or those that are reluctant to try new menu ideas might be encouraged to step outside their comfort zone. It was a great little presentation and this little boy was as proud as can be. Even with his mask on you could see him beaming! We will continue this monthly. I went to the dollar store and bought 10 trays and spray painted them all gold. My staff will be watching for kids who are really trying to on good behavior and use their manners and try new things. Dear Parent/Guardian: Keep up the spectacular parenting! Sincerely, Deb Mackey Food Service Director 518-450-4085 dmackey@mechanicville.org
