N Y S N A Strategic Plan 2 0 2 1 - 2 3

What is strategic Planning? Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. Strategic planning is a tool that is useful for guiding day-to-day decisions and also for evaluating progress and changing approaches when moving forward. Why do we need a strategic plan? Because a strategic plan establishes a direction for your business to take, it will help it sharpen its focus in order to get there. Strategic planning can therefore help your organization develop the right goals and targets and help everyone focus their efforts into meeting them. How often does it occur? NYSNA has a planning session every three years to develop a new plan. Participant Testimonials We asked participants, what was your favorite part about the strategic planning process? • Working with likeminded individuals whom all have the same end goal • Open Conversation – the ability to speak out and ask questions without retaliation was greatly appreciated. • Having the time for additional networking in a different setting. • Hearing different points of view and getting to see people and network again! • Hearing ideas and working as a team • I liked the way we were able to get to the objectives. Anyone in the roomwill be able to explain and communicate them. • Exchange of ideas, learning about past practices and realizing that doing the same thing is not resulting in a different outcome • Networking and seeing how the diverse perspectives around the table worked collaboratively together. There was a broad range of ages and experience levels and it was interesting watching and listening to everyone. • Seeing new faces getting involved! • I loved hearing all of the ideas and opinions, however different they may be. It is a testament to this group that at the end of each day they all came together and put all differences aside – true professionals. • Getting to plan the future of the association with a group of individuals who are just as passionate about school nutrition as I am

NELC is a regional association leadership conference. Each year the states in the SNA Northeast region takes turns hosting this event (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine). The state association leaders are invited to get together for a weekend of networking, association training, and fun, and NYSNA was proud to host the event in Clifton Park November 5-7, 2021. The conference theme this year was Providing a Positive Volunteer Leadership Experience and our speakers focused on different ways to help coach and develop stronger leaders and provided tips for making our volunteer leaders our talent scouts and brand ambassadors. We talked about howeverything from providing annual board orientations, to strategically using awards programs for recognition makes a big difference to the volunteer experience. On Friday night our industry partners welcomed all of the state leaders with a cool tabletop display show, followed by a fantastic dinner and TRIVIA (and

some people are more competitive than you might think)! Saturday’s programming was informative, engaging, and entertaining and of course NYSNA provided a Farm to Table dinner experience at the Mouzon House in Saratoga Springs. We also had Matt Orley from Big Picture Strategy onsite to capture the discussions visually as well. On Sunday we closed out the weekend conference with the amazing Jon Colby with his presentation on “The Happiness Advantage” CONFERENCE SPEAKERS
