Vice President’s Message

HEADQUARTERS

OFFICERS

Hello there, I wanted to first say as your NYSNA vice president that I hope this finds you and your family safe and well. We have had a fury of events transpire these past few years, especially in our first few months of this new school year. Today I’d like to focus not on what was or is happening currently. We could talk about the list of challenges we’re facing forever. Instead please join me in looking towards the future. Before we begin, I want to say thank you for what you do. If you’re reading this publication your profession falls in the realm of serving children and a community. What you do is a noble and necessary. You should know that you make the world we inhabit a better place for helping to take care of our children. I’d like to ask you a few questions. If you could be anywhere now, where would it be? Who are the people you’d want there with you? What is something big for you that you would like to accomplish? What is something big you’d like to accomplish in your time working? Finally, who else in your life knows the answers to those questions about you? We are currently living through a time being heralded as “The Great Resignation,” among other things. People are stopping the droned-out rat race and trying to decide more fulfilling ways of living their lives.

Find people that you can share a goal with and be encouraged both in your work and in pursuits of the heart. Now the whole team or even part of it may not be in your district. Some of it may be in family or friends. Another great pool of persons to check out is your peers at NYSNA. These are all people and that “get it” and understand what you do. They are also people that, like you, know how to serve others. Why not start with the best talent pool available? Being as transparent as I can, this is where we are spending the most of our time and energy friends. Let’s make the time we share as grand as possible. The team brought in the dynamic and intuitive Jon Colby, who presented the happiness advantage we have when we stay lit up, joyous, empowered and appreciated. I think we can all agree on most of these concepts. The issue that comes up though, is how? How do we stay positive more consistently? How do we helm the ship with inspiration, when the list is rife with staff being out constantly, food shortages and doing more with less? An answer I like to propose is taking better care of our “Bigs”. We need to nurture the things we want to accomplish both professionally and personally. Just like we plan our menus, schedule deliveries, communicate orders, maintain inventories and logs. Just like we assess staff and prepare for audits. We are already doing the practice. We just don’t apply those practices to ourselves. If we take care of the captain, the ship won’t get lost. The tweak, I believe is that dreaded word “ Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. - M. Scott Peck Ben Nemtin CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE Recently at our director’s meeting here on Long Island we reviewed SNA’s 2021 ANC keynote speaker Ben Nemtin from The Buried Life, and author of, “What do you want to do before you die”. One take away from his address was the need to share our goals and aspirations. We should be speaking them out to peers, without judgement and assisting each other in the manifesting of them. Dreaming big requires us to find our people and double down with them. pivot again. It is a turn, from operating from a survival mode mentality to more of a directional one. Today, in this very delicate environment we’re all navigating, I think it’s important to get a little selfish and introspective. Now is as good a time as any to
