Honorees Claire and Bob Brown A couple who has contributed to the betterment of CAPTAIN Community Human Services

Claire and Bob have been involved with CAPTAIN since the mid 80’s when Claire was an English teacher at Shen and realized how vital CAPTAIN’s services were to some of her students’ families’ lives. She started tutoring at Cheryl’s Lodge, helped to plan after prom parties, and her sons became Teen Talkers (now CAPteens). CAPTAIN became an integral part of their family. In 1997, Claire was asked to join the Board of Directors. Over the years, she has volunteered in almost all of the programs, but is most proud of her work with Family Development – working with Bonnie Nelson, the program manager, and other volunteers, to bring empowerment programs to help clients live our mission “to build better lives.” She has served two terms as President of the Board of Directors; her first term was when Sue Catroppa was hired to be Executive Director and had to lead the agency out of the Great Recession. Her second term was 10 years later, when Sue was finishing her tenure as ED and had to reinvent the agency’s work in response to the COVID crisis. The strength of the entire Board, the leadership of the senior team, and the loyalty and commitment of the staff and volunteers resulted in the agency’s emerging from each crisis bigger, stronger, and more effective. Bob and Claire have been faithful annual donors for over 35 years. They are Anchor Society members and believe deeply that their responsibility to support the work of CAPTAIN in our community is a social and moral obligation.

Honorees Bricks and Mortar An outstanding Thoroughbred who has captured our hearts

Bricks and Mortar (foaled March 2, 2014) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was named the American Horse of the Year in 2019. After winning four of six starts at age three, he missed most of his four-year-old campaign due to illness. At age five however, he established himself as the top-ranked turf horse in North America with wins in the Pegasus World Cup Turf, Muniz Memorial Handicap, Turf Classic Stakes, Manhattan Handicap and Arlington Million. He then won the Breeders’ Cup Turf to complete a perfect year. Owned by Bill and Gloria Lawrence.
