The Gates Chili School Nutrition Team has been offering free meals through the USDA Summer Food Service Program for the past nine years. An integral part of increasing participation in the summer meals program is increasing awareness. For years, there have been flyers, banners, newspaper articles and even news stations promoting free meals at Gates Chili. This year, they added a new approach. School Nutrition Coordinator Marisa Bellanca, who is a registered dietitian, joined the Gates Chili School Nutrition team in September 2018. Her expertise on the topic of food and nutrition has been an asset to all of the food programs happening at Gates Chili. With social media use on the rise, a need was identified to find a way to not only promote summer meals but share nutrition tips and fun ideas with families. Monroe County School Nutrition Association celebrated it’s retirees with lawn signs at our Spring Chicken BBQ, a certificate and a service pin. series was born. The video series features each Gates Chili school’s kitchen for a total of six short social media videos; one for each week of the summer meals program. These videos are shared on the district’s social media accounts every Tuesday, which audiences have come to know as “School Nutrition Tuesday.” The videos promote summer meals and the nutritional benefits behind the food served at Gates Chili; everything from whole grains, to lean protein to the vitamins and minerals in milk. “We at Gates Chili are very fortunate to have Marisa, our dietitian, along with a very knowledgeable management team,” said Director of School Nutrition Janice Phillips. “Our staff puts their heart into everything we do here at Gates Chili School Nutrition. Social media is a wonderful way to get the word out on all the exciting things going on with our busy summer meals program.”
