President Elect’s Message
I have spent a great deal of time lately thinking about normalcy. It wasn’t so long ago my mindset was “I just want normal back”. Sometime between September and today, that mindset has changed. What I used to perceive as temporary and inconvenient has now shifted to a mindset of “How can I take advantage of this unprecedented event to re-invent my programs, myself, my staff? I am honored to be writing this to you as the 67th President of the New York School Nutrition Association. When I look back at the names of those who came before me I am humbled and I realize that the bar has been set incredibly high. I am looking forward to serving you this year. I want to emphasize that if you have any ideas, questions or concerns, please reach out to me. I will be more than happy to listen. It has been such an exciting year for all of us. There have been so many unknown factors playing a part in our everyday lives at home, at work and in the Association. Even though there are numerous challenges there are also numerous opportunities. We held our first virtual House of Delegates meeting in October. It was fantastic. Lowell Aplebaum did a tremendous job of sharing information on excellence in volunteering. We also held our first virtual event, From The Show Floor . It was such a great time. John Colby did

a remarkable job of bringing The New York and New Jersey School Nutrition Associations together while showing us the importance of how we communicate with others. I can’t wait to see Eric Papp and hear what he has to say about “Taking Bold Action In Uncertain Times” on December 2nd. The From The Show Floor site is open and it is full of information. We hope you take full advantage of it. Our Executive Director, Jennifer Martin and the Headquarters Staff, Ashleigh and Alyssa, have done an incredible job of bringing us a virtual food show and incentive game like no other. I love that NYSNA is the leader in the country for putting together this incredible event. As if all of this wasn’t enough, we are also offering Committee Days for the first time. This event was full of information for everyone. It covered the Association’s structure and governance model, the benefits and services you get from the Association, as well as a committee orientation. Chapter leaders even had the opportunity to gather information to take back to their groups to help them achieve their goals. On November 13th, NYSNA hosted a food drive to benefit Karyl’s Kupboard Emergency Food and Hygiene Pantry, to assist the members of Saratoga County. It was a huge success. As you can see great things have been happening with NYSNA and we’ve got even more on the way. I was asked to make a list of 10 things that most people don’t know about me:
The past year has taught me that these are the times that create great change. This is an opportunity to re-invent ourselves. While Superintendent’s and school officials scramble to figure this out, it dawned on me that we have an opportunity here to re-invent school meals. Let’s face it….child nutrition programs across the country have already proven we can make it happen under the most stressful of circumstances and often at the last minute. Why not use this time to assess how we can permanently pivot our roles to adapt to this ever-changing environment and not just survive, but thrive? I’ll admit, it is challenging and exhausting, but the benefit of feeding hungry kids, in whatever form that takes, gives me a sense of pride unlike any other endeavor I may happen to undertake. Nothing makes me more proud than knowing I am a part of making sure hungry kids can count on at least two meals a day from me and my staff; regardless of how/where they attend school, I will be a part of their day. Speaking of inventive and forward thinking…. how fortunate are we, NYSNA, to have an executive director who thinks of ways to move our association forward at a time when so many other associations are struggling to manage. Thanks to the insight and forethought of our Executive Director, Jennifer Martin, and her fabulous staff, we have “From the Show Floor.” If you have not taken the opportunity to check out this new feature, you do not know what you are missing. What an awesome way for our membership to stay engaged with our industry partners and continue to see what exciting products they have to offer us as we maneuver our way through changing circumstances. From the Show Floor is a truly inventive platform for keeping our membership engaged and informed. I hope you will consider tuning in. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the out-going 2019/2020 board members for their years of service and dedication to this association. I truly enjoyed working along side and with many of you and I learned something unique from each of you. I also would like to welcome the new board members. I look forward to working with you and seeing what amazing ideas we can see accomplished together. Additionally, I long for the days when we can all be collaborating and celebrating together again. Until that time, stay healthy my friends. I was born and raised in Kenmore, NY. We decided to move to Wilson 22 Years ago and I unexpectedly fell in love with it.
I married my High School Sweetheart 36 1/2 years ago.
I love seafood and found out when I went to the NERL Conference in Portland, Maine with Kim Roll that they have the best lobster I have ever tasted.
I enjoy spending time on the back of my husband’s Harley.
I have been in Child Nutrition since moving to Wilson in 1998, I have been a Food Service Director since 2012.
I have a tremendous fear of heights (and water), yet somehow Anne Marie Norton and Anne Rich got me to go down the 10 story slide at the City Museum in St. Louis and I loved it!!
I have 4 children – Christopher age 35, Jessica age 32, Melissa age 29 and Coco age 27. I also have 2 granddaughters, Riley age 15 and Peyton age 11.
My favorite food is shrimp, but I try to eat French fries and pizza every day!!
I used to breed Labrador Retrievers. Now I have a cat.
My favorite place to be is in my own backyard.
There you have it. It was actually more difficult than I thought it would be to think of things. I can’t wait to see what 2021 holds for all of us. Whatever it is I am sure we will make it great! Wishing you all Happy Holidays!

SUSAN BELL NYSNA President Susan Bell is the Food Service Director for Wilson Central School District, located in Wilson, NY! She has been in Child Nutrition for 22 years and loves school meals. Sue’s goal is to make the Association inclusive to everyone! NY is full of amazing Child Nutrition personnel and they can always turn to NYSNA for all of their School Nutrition needs.
We realize that your emails are being cluttered and your days filled with meetings. So, here at NYSNA we wanted to find a new way to communicate with the members, without relying on too much email. Rather than sending the standard monthly e-newsletter via email we created something BETTER! Dear NYSNA Members, Welcome to 2021! I am sure we can all agree that we are just not going to talk about 2020 anymore, or think about, or even acknowledge that year ever happened. This year is going to be great and we have some exciting updates to share with you to kick off the new year. New Magazine First, let’s talk about the magazine! You may have noticed the name has changed and is no longer called FOCUS on School Nutrition – welcome to your first issue of FRESH BITES! Fresh Bites will be your quarterly, digital publication. Issues will be stored in the members’ section of the website. We asked our committees for input to name the new magazine and then we took the list of suggested names and YOU, the members, voted! Thank you for the amazing fresh new name of our magazine. Why are we no longer printing these issues? NYSNA had to make budget adjustments, along with all of you I am sure, and the cost to print the magazines was probably much more expensive than one might guess. But, this digital platform is very exciting and interactive. We think you will actually get much more from this technology and we look forward to bringing you plenty of fun and informative issues. New Board of Directors I want to welcome our new Board of Directors, led by president Sue Bell. You will get to learn a bit more about our new president in this issue and we will be using the new NYSNA News platform to help you get to know the rest of the board, and committees too! From the Show Floor Our most recent event, From the Show Floor, has been such a success and we thank all of you for participating. In the last issue we were excited to launch the event on November 2nd and I am excited to share some fun facts about the event since that time: Attendee Data: We did an analysis to compare the attendance of district directors at the past conferences (2015 to 2019) to the registered attendees (first month) of From the Show Floor and we have increased our district director attendance by 28% - that is AMAZING! Event will remain open until June, which means you can still sign up. Live keynote workshops were recorded and added into the event website so you may watch as many times as you like. “From the Show Floor is a valuable tool for all Directors in the Child Nutrition field. It gives you an opportunity to stay connected with our Industry partners, as well as staying up to date with what is trending in the K-12 market. FTSF is great to have on your phone or desktop as a quick reference of products, nutrition information and Industry contacts.” Here is what some of your fellow NYSNA members are saying about the event: “I think From the Show Floor is such a great value added to a traditional food show. I have learned so much from the videos that I have watched, and I can go back anytime I want and watch them again. I could never spend 15 minutes with each vendor at a food show, so this allows me to give each vendor the same amount of attention. Along with that, From the Show Floor was so affordable I signed up all my managers for it so they can watch and give their feedback on items they would like to try. I hope From the Show Floor will return in 2021.”
Spring Virtual Workshop
We know that things are still pretty hectic right now and it may not be possible to meet in person for a while. That being said, we will plan something for you this spring to replace the area workshops that are traditionally held in various areas of the state. We will provide education and some fun networking, virtually of course. Stay tuned for more! We are serving K-5 lunch meals in the classroom and Middle School and High School students are on hybrid schedules. On their virtual learning day, we serve lunch to our BOCES students. Not to mention full-time virtual students receiving curbside meals! Our staff has been absolutely wonderful, and I can’t thank them enough! They have adapted seamlessly to all the changes thrown their way! I am sure this is true of every school district at this time! To celebrate, our K-5 students colored SNA picture sheets which we displayed outside the cafeterias. The Middle School and High School students received a prize for the first correctly completed SNA word scramble puzzle! Our artwork and winners were posted on the district Facebook and Instagram pages. Child Nutrition staff was featured and thanked on our district website also. I am always so appreciative of my employees; they are the best of the best!!

Naim Walcott is the Food Service Director for the Westhampton Beach UFSD in Westhampton Beach, NY. He has been in the foodservice industry for over 20 years. The last decade of which has been in school nutrition management and service programs. He currently serves on the Long Island School Nutrition Directors Association and LI Food Purchasing COOP. Some of his professional history includes banking as well as polysomnography. With a diverse background in service, Naim focuses on improving the food quality and the student’s experience from service to bite. He also does woodwork and hikes, citing Breakneck Ridge in Coldsprings, NY as one of his favorite trails.
Katy Headwell is the Food Service Director at Shenendehowa Central Schools in Clifton Park, NY. She has been in her position for 9 years and loves being in school food service. She gets excited seeing students try new foods and working with great people. She enjoys spending time with her husband, son and 2 dogs.

As the Southern Tier Area Director, it was my pleasure to award the NYSNA “Manager of the Year” award to Tina McCaffery from the Windsor Central School District on behalf of the NYSNA Leadership Team. Tina is the Manager at C. R. Weeks Elementary School. She has always gone above and beyond for her students and has integrated the cafeteria into the school. Caring and dedication has been her strength throughout this pandemic. The Southern Tier Area also had the NYSNA “Employee of the Year!” Deb Battaglia from Binghamton City School District won this prestigious award. Deb is the lead food service
professional at MacArthur Elementary School. She always has one of the best-decorated serving areas and kitchens in the region. Congratulations to Tina and Deb! Hope we can have a proper celebration in the future! I have worked with both of these awesome people and it has been my pleasure to be presenting them with these well-deserved awards, great job! This year is flying by at an alarming pace; please take a moment to appreciate the gifts we have around us. I wish you all happy holidays to you and yours and stay safe.

You all probably don’t recognize me, because I am a Cornell Dietetic Intern working with the dietitian at Broome-Tioga BOCES Rock on Café. I started my internship this past August and will wrap it up right before Thanksgiving, so COVID has been a factor my entire time here. Visual messaging on social media and other platforms has become one of the main ways many of us have been able maintain connection with students and families, even as we work from home and are no longer able to visit schools as frequently. Many schools are creating wonderful videos and eye-catching posts to advertise free school meals and other important announcements, and I personally have been working hard to create fun, visually appealing and informative posts that will encourage engagement from our viewers. Before my internship I did not have a lot of experience creating info-graphics and social media posts, but since being here I have made some great content using Canva. Canva is a graphic design platform that has templates and other design components to help individuals make visually appealing posters, social media posts, and more. I like Canva because it is easy to use, free, and my projects come out looking nice! There is an option to pay for Canva, but I have had no issues using the free version. Canva is just one common graphic design platform out there, but it is a great tool for nutrition educators and food service staff to share messages with the public. If you haven’t checked it out, I recommend that you do! www.Canva.com

The Golden Spoon Award debuted early this October with the Broome-Tioga BOCES Rock on Café as a way to recognize school nutrition professionals who have gone above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ranzenhofer Honors Barbara Goodman as Woman of Distinction
Barbara Goodman , Food Service Director of Akron Central, will serve as Associate Program Chair for Workshops and assist the Secretary. Shawn Kelley , Buffalo City Schools, will Chair Membership. Katie Denning of Southside School in Buffalo will Chair Ways & Means. Anita Trautwein , Food Service Director at Alden Central, will serve as Associate Ways & Means, as will Annemarie Norton of Affinity Group Infusion an Industry Advisor. Mary Lou Groff , Akron Central serves as Publicity Chair. Becky O’Connor , from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County, will serve as Farm to School Coordinator. Diana McCarthy of S.A. Piazza is an Industry Advisor and Industry Membership Assistant. Susan Birmingham , Retired Director, serves as Representative to the Council of Food Service Associations. Even though our fall banquet for 2020 was put on hold, Barbara Albi is coordinating a collection of items for the holiday campaign of Haven House. This organization is a shelter or safe-haven in Erie County for families affected by domestic violence. ECSNA members make the NEWS! Our President, Ruth Conner was featured in the September SNF Publication for the recipient of a SNF Scholarship and “Feed Kids Now” Grant. Buffalo City Schools were featured on WGRZ TV for it’s “Farm to School to You” truck. The truck will be able to feed students hot meals with local and healthy foods that include locally sourced meat, dairy, and produce. Finally, Barbara Goodman of Akron Central School District was honored on August 26, 2020 with The Women of Distinction, Honoring Women in New York and Presented by the New York State Senate. She was selected as a Woman of Distinction by Senator Michael Ranzenhofer. Congratulations Barbara for being the only woman in school food service chosen for this honor!
The School Nutrition Association together with all the school districts across New York State are meeting the Erie County
needs of students and families whether they are totally remote, hybrid, or completely in school. Over the last few months since Covid- 19 Pandemic began, one thing is for certain, we are all flexible and changing our programs to accommodate our schools. We have learned to smile with our eyes and that social distancing is not impossible. Hand washing and sanitizing are the normal for everyone even though the school lunch staffers had perfected this a long time ago! The ECSNA met in person, socially distanced in August and planned out the 2020-2021 events even though the year seemed uncertain due to Covid. Past President, Anne Rich , passed the torch to the new President of Erie County School Nutrition Association, Ruth Conner . Ruth recently was promoted to Food Service Director at Williamsville Schools and will serve as President of ECSNA for a two-year term. Anne Rich, Food Service Director at Hamburg Central School will serve as Counselor. President Elect is Tami Augugliaro , Food Service Director at Lancaster Central School District. She will also oversee Scholarships and Honorary Memberships, as well as Program Chair for Workshops. Shirley Evans of the Buffalo City Schools is the elected Secretary. Barbara Albi , Food Service Director at Depew U.F.S.D. is the elected Treasurer and will also serve as Legislation Chair. Crystal Humphry of City Honors was appointed Program Chair for Banquets. Mary Brucz , Food Service Director of Cheektowaga Sloan as appointed Associate Program Chair.

Clarence, NY – Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer has recognized Barbara Goodman as a 2020 Women of Distinction for her dedication and leadership serving our community. “Barbara has spent decades serving our community. She has worked selflessly to assure that students are receiving the best nutrition while in the care of our schools. I am very happy to be able to honor her and recognize her for her dedication to the health and wellbeing of our children,” said Ranzenhofer. Barbara Goodman has spent 32 years in the field of nutrition. She has spent many of those years with the School Nutrition Association and has won many awards during this time. Her current role is working as the Food Service Director of Akron Schools. Additionally, she has served all of Erie County as President of the Erie County School Nutrition Association. In 1997-98 she was awarded the Silver
Medal by the Council of Food Services Association and spent over a decade as the secretary for the NYS School Nutrition Association. Currently, she is serving as Counselor for the Erie County School Nutrition Association. Throughout the years, Barbara has received numerous recognitions. Including in 2007 when Akron Schools received the Gold Award from the USDA for their food service program, led by Barbara. Her dedication to the betterment of New York State is widely recognized by her family, friends and neighbors in Western New York. During the 2020 Pandemic, Barbara answered the community’s call by organizing a meal distribution program for the Akron School District. The impact was evident by the lines of cars that showed up to receive meals.

Cheryl’s portfolio of work is centered on strengthening and fostering local food systems – for the betterment of value chain partners, the community, and the environment. She is incredibly passionate about farm to school for two primary reasons. First, she believes that institutions, through their purchasing power, have an incredible opportunity to foster economic growth for regional farmers and food producers. Second, as an innate believer that good food is medicine, she is energized by the opportunity to ensure youth receive healthier foods and that they are given opportunities to forge a deeper connection with the source of their food.
We are passionate about farm to school! Throughout this membership year, we will highlight farm to school across New York State in various ways, including: Farm to School Awards Yearly Partnership Award in Collaboration with New York State Agriculture and Markets. Fresh Bites Magazine Articles Highlighting the great farm to school initiatives! Coordinating Meeting Collaboration with New York State Agriculture and Markets of Farm to School Advocates across the State. Partnerships Through our Core Partnership with the National Farm to School Network Involvement Through involvement on the Northeast Farm to School Collaborative, Farm to Institution New York State Leadership Team, and Cornell University Farm to School Program Work Team
Our goals are to showcase all the Farm to School efforts in New York State and provide guidance to strengthen farm to school efforts. She literally plans her vacations around farmers markets, local restaurants, and anything else to do with food. Julie currently works with 15 school districts in the Southern Tier of New York State where they implement NY Thursdays, a menu that highlights NY foods twice a month.
ROSEMARIE HANSON Food Service Director Trumansburg Central School District Rose grew up going to the State Fair every summer and the Syracuse Regional Market every weekend and loves going to the farmer’s markets to this day. Rose is continuing to source at least 30% of the district’s food purchases from local and NY sources, and looks forward to growing connections between students and their local farmers and food producers.

Kate has been working with the Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES Food Service Program since early 2009. She has worked closely with a group of regional partners to create the Mohawk Valley Farm to School Initiative (MVFTS). Together, the team helps regional schools, especially those in her own OHM BOCES Food Service Program, procure and serve more products that have been grown and raised in New York State. Kate loves running, hiking, traveling, being outdoors and spending time in the Adirondacks with her husband and two girls. As her youngest daughter enters kindergarten and her oldest enters 2nd grade, she realizes now, more than ever, how important it is to continue to improve and change the food culture in our schools, homes and communities.

Connecting with state legislators can really make a difference to your child nutrition program! A year ago NYS Assemblyman Sean Ryan was a judge at the 1st Annual Jr. Chef Challenge at Hamburg Middle School. He became very interested in our Farm to School initiative and wanted to learn more. Sharing with him our vision of expanding the program to Middle and High School through a greenhouse program proved quite fruitful! Assemblyman Sean Ryan joined Superintendent Michael Cornell in September to announce $125,000 in state funding to enhance Farm-to- School (F2S) education in the district through construction of a greenhouse at Hamburg High School. The greenhouse will provide agricultural science and agribusiness experiences for students. Produce grown in it will also be used
in the school lunch program. Hamburg’s Farm to School program will now allow students to continue cultivating their garden experiences beyond elementary school and into Middle and High School. There are raised garden beds at all four of Hamburg’s elementary schools, where young students are introduced to gardening and learn where food comes from. A soft plastic seasonal hoop-house is in the works for the Middle School thanks to Steve Zdrojewski, a Middle School teacher that was awarded a hoop house grant through NY Ag in the Classroom. The addition of the large poly carbonate year-round High School greenhouse will expand the growing season and provide hands-on experience applicable to agricultural careers. Students Hamburg Middle School’s 8th grade culinary class are growing to understand the concept of farm-to-table through hands-on experience. They’re planting and in tending organic produce that will be used in both recipes in their classroom and in school lunches.
it’s the creation of eighth graders Lilly Williams, Emily Gollus, Emma Pietrzak and Darren Stry. For the Chef Challenge, student teams made their choice of pizza for judges to taste test. Local ingredients were used as toppings for this kick-off to Farm-to-School (F2S) month. The teams first worked on refining their recipes with tips from local professional chefs during virtual sessions. The winning team had advice from Butera’s Pizza. Due to this year’s hybrid schedule, the judging took place over two days. The event was coordinated by Food Service Director Anne Rich and Tricia Miller of the F2S team, with Family & Consumer Science teacher Sheri Gund. Farmer Brendan Monaco of Goodman Farms, distributor of the four-tier grow rack (show in lower photo, spent time with students teaching them how to use it. The rack has since become a staple in the culinary classroom, typically used for such plants as lettuce and basil. From soil and seeds to food preparation with freshly cut greens, students are learning about the source of food and healthy eating. And, as what they grow makes its way into the cafeteria kitchen, they’re also sharing that bounty with their peers. This “seed to table” experience recently caught the eye of the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA), which presented the district with a Champions of Change for Kids award. The award recognizes innovative programs in school districts across the state. In a presentation at the October School Board meeting, Superintendent Michael Cornell credited Food Service Director Anne Rich and Tricia Miller of the Farm-to-School team, along with Family & Consumer Science teachers Sheri Gund and Stacey Smith, for spearheading the project. The project sprouted in early 2020 when district parents Gary and Gina Wieczorek, owners of Produce Peddlers, donated a terraponic indoor growing system to the culinary program. The taco pizza featured on November’s school lunch menu came from a recipe perfected by a team of Hamburg Middle School culinary students. Judged as the favorite pizza in the second annual Jr. Chef Challenge in October,
