want you to help students make every bite count. The Guidelines’ slogan, “Make Every Bite Count,” places an emphasis on consuming nutrient-dense foods and beverages. That is why milk and dairy products are such an important part of school meals and why dairy is still recognized as its own food group, thanks to the powerful unique nutritional package found only in dairy. New this year, the Guidelines provide recommendations by life stage, which includes an entire section dedicated to children and adolescents from ages 2 to 18 years, a critical time for the development of healthy eating patterns and growth. For Grade Schoolers and Early Adolescents (6-13 Years Old), this is the stage where building healthy habits can impact a lifetime of health. Dairy foods provide sources of important nutrients of concern – calcium, potassium and vitamin D. During the Adolescent (14-18 Years Old) life stage, it is crucial to provide necessary nutrition during this unique growth period, making nutritious food choices important. The nutrients of concern mentioned above are especially important during adolescence to support bone growth, and dairy foods provide
