COMMITTEES Farm to School

Farm to School Feature (Continued)

POUGHKEEPSIE FARM PROJECT Just days after the pandemic closed schools, Poughkeepsie Farm Project educators shifted gears to bring local produce directly to free meals sites twice a week. Throughout the last year produce was distributed with Harvest of the Month materials including a bilingual Harvest of the Month coloring book and recipe cards and outreach materials for distance learning programs. The Poughkeepsie Farm Project education department developed a brand new program called PFP@Home , a Farm to School video series with bilingual cooking and gardening videos featuring farm produce. These videos were distributed with recipe and container gardening kits to over 180 families that signed up. To further enhance virtual learning and make Farm to School accessible to everyone at home, the PFP Harvest of the Month Resource Hub was developed to host all types of recipes, videos, blogs and other educational materials for each Harvest of the Month item.

THE EAST END FARM TO SCHOOL PROJECT: A COALITION OF BRIDGEHAMPTON, SOUTHAMPTON, AND TUCKAHOE SCHOOLS Food Service Directors from all three districts in The East End Farm to School Project, a coalition of Bridgehampton, Southampton, and Tuckahoe Schools located on eastern Long Island, continued to order from local farms as they were able to throughout 2020. Southampton School District, the largest in the coalition, not only planted their school garden with lettuces that were served in the cafeteria, they charged ahead with a new “Farmer of the Month” initiative paired with their ongoing “Harvest of the Month” taste tests. In October, Farm to School month, they kicked off the initiative with fresh apples from nearby Milk Pail Farm. November was butternut squash, roasted according to a recipe the cafeteria staff learned from a Chef Brigaid training they participated in last year. December featured a delicious kale salad, topped with some local apple slices. All three dishes were a hit, and educational fliers in both English and Spanish were shared with the students as well as published on the district nutrition website and shared on social media .

INTRODUCING Eggoji ™

TRUMANSBURG CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT As we have continually shifted from in person to remote, it has been hard to focus on much more than packing meals for classroom delivery and home delivery, but through it all we have consistently bought NYS Foods such as Great Lakes Cheddar and Mozzarella, Upstate Milk, yogurt, and string cheese, grape juice, and NY apples. We discovered the Summer Food Service Program allows for meals on weekends and holidays. We took advantage of this to offer a “Local Holiday Christmas Meal Kit” with a gallon of NY Milk, a half-gallon of Beak and Skiff Cider, a dozen Autumn’s Harvest Eggs, a loaf of Wide Awake Bakery bread made with locally grown wheat, local kale from Stick and Stone Farm, local apples from Black Diamond Farm, local goat cheese from Lively Run and local Butternut Squash from Silver Queen Farm. Not only did this help put food on our families’ tables for the holidays, it help support the local farmers in our community.
